Governor Brown signed into law two companion bills: AB 1676 and SB 1063.
AB 1676 amends last year’s Fair Pay Act, to prohibit employers from considering the prior salary of an applicant/new employee as the sole justification for any disparity in compensation with current employees.
SB 1063 expands the Fair Pay Act to include race and ethnicity in addition to gender. Specifically, it would prohibit employers from paying employees a wage less than the wage paid to employees of a different race or ethnicity for substantially similar work.
(Amends Labor Code Sections 1197.5 and 1199.5)
